PICKLEBALL PROVING POPULAR AT YMCA
Tuesday, November 18, 2014
This fall the Paris-Bourbon County YMCA introduced a sport that might be new to many, but which takes its roots from very familiar games like tennis, ping-pong and badminton. Pickleball is a sport played inside or outside on a badminton-sized court with special pickleball paddles, made of wood. The ball is similar to a whiffle ball, but slightly smaller. The lower net and ball allow the game to be accessible to people of all ages and abilities, while still allowing more competitive players to test their athletic ability.
The Y is offering pickleball clinics twice a week on Wednesdays and Fridays at 9 a.m. in the gymnasium. The clinics, which have been growing in popularity, are free to YMCA members.
“The pickleball clinics have been a lot of fun and a great form of play and exercise for our members,” says program director Morgan Gleaves. “It has been particularly popular with our senior members, who find the required mobility to be accessible while offering good exercise as well as social interaction with peers.”
The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) currently estimates there are now over 100,000 players actively playing pickleball. Many kids and teenagers play it in physical education classes in middle and high schools. Seniors enjoy the social aspects and the ability to stay active in towns and retirement communities.
Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle, WA. Three dads – Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum - whose kids were bored with their usual summertime activities are credited for creating game. Pickleball has evolved from original hand-made equipment and simple rules into a popular sport throughout the US and Canada.
Registration is not necessary to attend one of the Y’s Pickleball clinics. For more information, contact the YMCA at 859-987-1395 or email email@example.com.

Monday, February 03, 2014
Paris-Bourbon County YMCA Youth Soccer is pleased to announce a year of partnership with Challenger Sports, providers of the USA’s most popular soccer camp, to host the week long British Soccer camp during the week of 6/16/2014 – 6/20/2014 at Paris-Bourbon County YMCA Soccer Field.
The camp will run Monday through Friday and each child will be coached by a member of Challenger’s British coaching staff flown to the USA exclusively to work on these programs. Challenger will hold over 3,900 British Soccer Camps this summer and will coach over 140,000 players between the ages of 3 and 18, as well as completing FREE coach education clinics for over 30,000 parents and coaches.
Challenger’s British Soccer Camp is more than a week of drills and skills. In addition to taking part in a daily regimen of foot skill development (through the 1,000 touches curriculum), technical and tactical practices and daily ‘World Cup’ tournament style plays, each child will be treated to a rich cultural experience and lessons on respect, responsibility, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship. Each camper will receive a FREE camp T-shirt, soccer ball, soccer poster, individual skills performance evaluation and free access to an educational soccer website.
