HEALTHY KIDS DAY
Wednesday, April 17, 2013
This free community event gets more families moving, learning and living healthier. Healthy Kids Day, a national initiative of the Y, takes place at 1,900 Ys and features fun and educational activities. We are focusing on health and education to ensure fewer children are at an increased risk for childhood obesity and more children succeed in school. During summer, many children lose exposure to out-of-school activities that keep their minds and bodies active, leaving them at risk of falling behind academically and gaining weight twice as fast as they would during the school year.
Some of the activities and organizations that will be there are:
Hula Hoop Contest
Obstacle Course Inflatable
Jump Rope Contest
Healthy Snack Station
Face Painting
Craft Table
Zumba Demonstrations
Corn Hole
Health Department
Fire Department
City and State Police

HEALTHY RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Friday, September 28, 2012
Healthy Recipe of the Week:
Crunchy Chicken Tenders with Herb-Buttermilk Dressing
This is an excellent healthy alternative for those who love fried chicken. No frying oil, no frying pan. Most ingredients can be found in your kitchen! Buttermilk is a great addition of flavor and nutrition to the recipe – providing protein, calcium and probiotic power. The whole wheat bread crumbs are higher in fiber and lower in processed sugar than white bread crumbs. Greek yogurt is found in the dairy section at your grocery store or WalMart. Happy cooking!
· For the Chicken
o 1 cup buttermilk
o 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
o 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
o 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
o 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breast, pounded to even thickness, cut into strips
o 2 cups whole wheat breadcrumbs
o Olive oil, for drizzling
· For the Dressing
o 1/3 cup buttermilk
o 3 tablespoons 2% Greek yogurt
o 1 tablespoons chives, minced
o 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
· For Serving
o 4 stalks celery, cut into sticks
o 2 romaine hearts, quartered
o Hot sauce to taste
Directions
1. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with a wire rack. Combine buttermilk, mustard, salt, and cayenne in a nonreactive dish. Dip chicken in mixture and transfer to dish with breadcrumbs, pressing to coat. Transfer to baking sheet. Drizzle with oil. Bake until golden and chicken is cooked through, about 16 minutes. Season with salt.
2. Meanwhile, combine buttermilk, yogurt, chives, and salt in a bowl for dressing. (Add 1 Tbsp. crumbled blue cheese, if desired.)
3. Serve chicken with dressing, celery, romaine hearts, and hot sauce.

WE'RE BUILDING STRONG AND BRIGHT FUTURES
Wednesday, February 02, 2011
With the start of the new school year all Paris and Bourbon County 2nd graders had a new class to attend. The Paris-Bourbon County Y offered free swim lessons to over 275 2nd graders during the school day, while teaching children water safety.
The Y chose to target 2nd graders because they are able to retain the knowledge needed to learn to swim. “Recent studies have shown that 7 year olds that can’t swim are the most likely age group to drown,” according to Cathy Boone, Executive Director/CEO, Paris-Bourbon County YMCA.
The Paris-Bourbon Y offers a variety of water safety programs including Lifeguard Certification and Private and Group Swim Lessons (Ages 6 months- Adult).
“At the Paris-Bourbon Y we are committed to providing as many opportunities as possible for everyone to learn basic swimming skills and water safety practices,” said Keith Lenox, Aquatics Director, Paris-Bourbon County YMCA.
This program is made possible through donations to the Y’s Annual Giving Campaign.
